Mammo Movie Plot
The film begins with Riyaz (Amit Phalke), a 13-year-old boy who lives with his grandmother Fayyazi (Surekha Sikri) in Bombay. He is bitter and lonely, as his father abandoned him and his mother died when he was young. He has only one friend, Rohan, who belongs to a richer and more privileged class.
One day, they receive a surprise visit from Fayyazi's sister, Mehmooda Begum Anwar Ali (Farida Jalal), who is affectionately called Mammo by Riyaz. Mammo is a lively and cheerful woman who brings joy and warmth to their lives. She tells them stories of her past, her marriage and her exile from Pakistan after the Partition of India.
Mammo was born in Panipat during the British Raj, and married a wealthy man who loved her dearly. They had no children, but they were happy until he died. After his death, Mammo was thrown out of her house by her greedy relatives who wanted to claim her property. She had nowhere else to go, so she came to India to live with her sister on a temporary visa.
Every month, she has to go to the police station to get an extension for her visa. She also pays a bribe to a corrupt inspector named Apte, who promises to get her a permanent visa. However, when Apte is transferred, a new inspector takes over and finds out that Mammo is an illegal immigrant. He arrests her and forces her to board a train that will take her back to Pakistan.
Riyaz and Fayyazi are devastated by Mammo's departure. They try everything they can to find her and bring her back, but they fail. They miss her terribly and hope that she is safe and happy wherever she is.
The film then jumps 20 years later, when Riyaz has grown up and become a successful writer. He has written a book about his Mammo, hoping that someday she will read it and contact him. He still remembers her fondly and wishes to see her again.
One day, he gets a phone call from Mammo herself. She tells him that she has faked her death in Pakistan and has come back to India secretly. She asks him to meet her at Haji Ali mosque, where they had spent some happy moments together. Riyaz is overjoyed and rushes to meet her.
The film ends with Riyaz and Mammo embracing each other at the mosque, while Fayyazi watches them from a distance with tears in her eyes.
